OpenOffice and Gimp are zero-fee. open-source alternatives to Microsoft Office and Adobe Photoshop. The commercial products cost, each, on the order of 1,000 USD. However, OpenOffice and Gimp give you equivalent document creation and editing powers for no cost. You still have to learn how to use them but that is true whether you use the commercial or open-source alternatives.
