The Western materialistic metaphysical stance on consciousness postulates one, and only one, personal identity, namely, the “meat” identity comprising the body into which we are born. This identity is labeled with a one-of-a-kind “real name” and other one-of-a-kind identifiers such as social security number, drivers license number. On occasion these one-of-a-kind tags can be legally changed, but only into another one-of-a-kind name or number.
How paltry and impractical. Since time immemorial human beings have had multiple identities including IMpersonal and PERsonal. grunt names, role names, work names, clan names, surnames, personal names, nicknames, aliases, pseudonyms, pen names, stage names, war names, art names… and more recently online names.
What makes a name “real”? Is it money? Is it following? Is it economic clout? Political clout? Aesthetic clout? Emotional clout? The ability to attract others? Persuade others? Alter the behavior of others?
